Spencer felt the trailer back up and come to a stop. The truck engine died. She strained to hear something that would give her a clue as to where they were but it was silent.

A slamming door broke the silence and she heard two male voices.

“Wait, Cassidy! I almost forgot. Pull this gag up so it covers my mouth again.”

Spencer felt Cassidy’s cold fingers on her face as the girl searched for the gag. She braced herself for the taste and feel of the disgusting rag, but couldn’t repress a shudder when Cassidy slipped the filthy piece of cloth back into her mouth. At least the gag fit a little looser this time and didn’t pull her lips back quite so far.

Cassidy slipped out of the stall. Spencer followed the sound of the male voices down along trailer side, below the stall window where she stood tied, and around to the opposite side.

There was a short, quiet pause and then the side door swung open and the ramp was lowered.

“Rislow said he tied her in one of the stalls.” A flashlight beam bounced around the trailer’s interior and came to rest on Spencer. “There she is.”

Spencer’s hopes sunk when she heard Menacing Man’s voice. Her brief plan to plead for her freedom died.

Menacing Man stood beside the ramp while his companion entered Spencer’s stall. He struggled with the knotted rope briefly, then swore and cut the rope. He grabbed Spencer’s left elbow and pulled her from the stall.

She grunted and shook her head in an attempt to tell him to remove the gag but both men ignored her.

“Lock her in the back room. Cut her hands free so she can use the bathroom. I’ll deal with her later. Right now I need some sleep.” Menacing Man strode ahead of Spencer and the second man toward a house that stood a short distance from the trailer.

There were no lights to be seen around them, which meant no neighbors to hear her screams, thought Spencer. She tried to make out some identifying details but it was too dark to see much despite the dim porch light. The yard appeared to be littered with rusty machinery and trash.

Spencer saw a broken-down couch below the porch. The porch itself was bare of the usual porch furniture, but the windows that looked onto the porch had curtains.

She considered making a break for the darkness but discarded the thought. Where would she go? Not knowing her surroundings she could easily fall onto a piece of the rusted, sharp-edged farm machinery, or down an old well, or injure herself in any number of awful ways.

As if reading her thoughts, the second man tightened his grip on Spencer’s bicep and growled out, “don’t even think about running.”

She got a look at Second Man when they reached the porch. She looked him over carefully, taking notice of as many details as possible in case she was called upon to describe him at a future time.

Second Man stood a couple inches taller than she did, roughly five-nine or -ten, with a bulky build.
